Your Voice Matters—Join Us as we gather 1 million across the country!

The stakes in this election are high, and with your help, we can make an indelible mark on the future of this country.

Here’s how you can get involved:

  • Weekend of Engagement: Starting on January 18th and 19th, we are engaging in voter outreach activities, phone banks, and canvassing in key communities. Every conversation matters in inspiring voter turnout.

  • Day of Action: On Monday, January 20th, we will focus on targeted efforts for early voting, with planned events at barbershops, churches, and other community hubs. This is our moment to encourage men to cast their votes early and take charge of the future of our communities.

Your participation in these events will help us reach the critical mass needed to make a real impact. Every hour you spend, every voter you connect with, brings us closer to a victory for justice, equity, and progress. Together, we can create the change we need and deserve.

Let’s make this a weekend to remember, and let’s do it for our families, our future, and our community.

Purpose & Structure of Toolkit

Dear Brothers, I am writing to you about the importance of the Weekend of Engagement and 1 Million Strong: Day of Action starting on October 26. These election activities are pivotal in ensuring our brothers get out and vote in this year’s election. The Weekend of Engagement is happening on Saturday, October 26 and Sunday, October 27 is our chance to encourage our community, family and friends to get out and vote now. 1 Million Strong: Day of Action is happening on October 29th is a multi-state mobilization of one million Black men to our state capitols. This is more than just a gathering; it is a powerful statement of our commitment to shaping the future through our votes. These events are about unity, empowerment, and ensuring our concerns are heard. Together, we, Black men, can make a difference for ourselves and future generations. Let’s start now. In solidarity, Deondra Randle Vice President of Programs, Win With Black Men

The Importance of Black Men in this Election

Our voices matter: Black men have the power to shape the future of America. We’ve seen what happens when we show up and make our voices heard in critical elections—change happens.

We are the difference-makers: In battleground states like [insert state], Black men are a pivotal voting bloc. Our turnout can swing this election, impacting policy and leadership that directly affects our communities.

A legacy of power: Throughout history, Black men have been at the forefront of movements for justice and equality. This election is no different. By voting, we honor our ancestors' struggles and pave the way for a better future.

Advocating for a Black Male Policy Agenda

Economic Empowerment: Commitment to advancing policies that create economic opportunities for Black men. Administration that will prioritize job training, apprenticeships, and Black-owned businesses, ensuring that Black men are not just employees but employers and innovators.

Criminal Justice Reform: Continue the fight to end systemic racism in the criminal justice system. The agenda includes federal reforms aimed at reducing mass incarceration, ending mandatory minimums for non-violent offenses, and restoring voting rights to formerly incarcerated individuals.

Health Equity: Addressing disparities in health care, especially in mental health and preventive care for Black men, is a central focus. Supporting expanding access to affordable health care, particularly in Black communities that have been historically underserved.

Education & Opportunity: Ensuring that Black boys and men have access to quality education is  key. This platform emphasizes funding HBCUs, creating pathways to higher education, and closing the digital divide for Black students.

Why This Voting Is Important

Our Future is on the Ballot: Policies that affect our daily lives—policing, health care, education,

and Job opportunities—are all on the line in this election. By voting, we’re not just choosing leaders, we’re choosing the future we want for ourselves and our children.

Securing Our Rights: Every election cycle, voter suppression and intimidation rear their ugly heads,

especially targeting Black men. Voting is a form of resistance against these efforts, securing our rights

and ensuring our voices aren’t silenced.

Creating Accountability: We need leaders who will follow through on promises made to Black men.

Tailored Points for Each Battleground State

Georgia:Georgia has proven that Black men can change the course of an election, just like we did in 2020. Now, we need to show up even stronger to secure our future and demand real economic and criminal justice reform.

Michigan: Detroit’s Black men are the heartbeat of this state. By showing up at the polls, we can ensure that our communities are prioritized, from job creation to access to quality healthcare.

Pennsylvania: Black men in Philly and Pittsburgh can be the deciding factor in whether we get leaders who truly understand the struggles and aspirations of Black men in America.

Wisconsin:The last election proved Wisconsin is a battleground state. Black men’s votes in cities like Milwaukee will determine whether we move forward with real change or stay stuck in the past.

North Carolina:Charlotte and Raleigh are home to thriving Black communities. Voting ensures our voices are at the center of conversations on education, jobs, and criminal justice.

Florida: From Miami to Jacksonville, Black men’s votes are critical in determining whether our state invests in Black businesses, criminal justice reform, and education for our youth.

Nevada: The growing Black community in Nevada is powerful. Let’s use our votes to demand more economic opportunities and justice for all.

Arizona: Black men’s votes in cities like Phoenix can swing this election. Our turnout is critical for ensuring we are heard on issues like policing and affordable housing.

Ohio: Cleveland and Columbus have strong Black populations, and our votes can determine the direction of our state's economy, education, and justice systems.

Virginia: Virginia’s history is a reminder of why our votes matter. This election, Black men can secure a future where our communities are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.

Best Practices for Media Relations

Be Responsive and Accessible

  • Respond to all media inquiries promptly and professionally, even if the response is to inform them when more information will be available.

  • Be available on the day of events to facilitate media access and interviews.

Stay on Message

  • Avoid going off-script or addressing off-topic questions. Use bridging statements to redirect conversations back to the campaign’s core message (e.g., “What’s important to focus on here is…”).

  • Stick to facts and campaign priorities to avoid miscommunication or confusion.

Monitor Media Coverage

  • Track and share media coverage of your events with the national communications team to showcase the impact of your efforts.

  • If necessary, follow up with journalists after events to ensure they have all the information they need to complete their story.

  • Space Considerations: Ensure there is enough space for media equipment (cameras, microphones, tripods) and attendees. Check for strong Wi-Fi, good lighting, and adequate sound for clear communication.

03

Send Out Media Invitations

  • Media Advisory: Issue a media advisory 3-5 days in advance. Include the who, what, when, where, and why of the event, along with contact details. Send it to your list of journalists, local news stations, and radio stations.

  • Follow-up: Call or email media contacts to confirm receipt and their attendance. Assign someone from your team to track RSVPs and manage media inquiries.

Setting Up

  • Check the Setup Early: Arrive at least 90 minutes prior to the event to oversee setup. Ensure the podium, microphones, cameras, and seating arrangements are ready. Test all technical equipment.

  • Press Check-In Table: Set up a check-in table near the entrance where media can sign in and pick up press kits (include press releases, bios, fact sheets, and talking points).

  • Branding: Ensure the backdrop prominently features Win With Black Men branding or other campaign visuals, such as banners or posters, to provide a professional appearance.

05

On-Site Roles

  • Spokesperson: The spokesperson should be a well-prepared campaign representative (Khalil Thompson or a local surrogate). They must deliver concise, impactful statements and stay on message.

  • Media Coordinator: This person should manage the press, assist with seating, and handle any technical difficulties. They should also facilitate post-conference interviews.

  • Timekeeper: Ensure the press conference stays on schedule. Typically, press conferences should last between 20-30 minutes, including time for a brief Q&A.

06

Order of Events

  • Introduction: A designated host should welcome everyone, introduce the speakers, and briefly outline the purpose of the press conference.

  • Keynote Address: The primary speaker delivers the key message, emphasizing the importance of the campaign’s goals (e.g., voter turnout, Black male leadership, criminal justice reform).

  • Supporting Speakers: Other relevant figures (community leaders, advocates) can briefly provide their perspectives and experiences.

  • Q&A Session: Open the floor for questions from the media. Have clear, concise answers prepared, and avoid going off message. If necessary, redirect questions back to the campaign’s core goals using bridging techniques.

07

Media Follow-Up

  • Press Kit Distribution: Immediately after the press conference, send digital copies of the press release and press kit to journalists who attended and those who didn’t.

  • Availability: Offer additional interviews or sound bites as needed. Ensure spokespeople are available for follow-ups.

08

Monitor Media Coverage

  • Track the press coverage across TV, radio, and online platforms. Share positive coverage with your team and report any missed opportunities for follow-up coverage.

Sample Op-Ed: Black Men Are the Key to Victory in This Election

As a State Captain for Win With Black Men, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the power of collective action in our communities. This weekend, we are launching a nationwide Weekend of Engagement and on Tuesday, 1 Million Strong: Day of Action that centers the voices, votes, and vision of Black men. For too long, we have been the sleeping giant of electoral politics. In this crucial 2024 election, we can no longer afford to remain silent or on the sidelines.

Why is the Black male vote so important? The answer is simple: Black men are the margin of victory in battleground states across the country. Historically, our communities have faced significant voter suppression, disinformation, and underrepresentation. But we know that when Black men show up at the polls, we have the power to swing elections, determine policy outcomes, and shift the national conversation.

At Win With Black Men, we understand the stakes in this election. That's why we’ve built a comprehensive Black Male Agenda (add link from website) that reflects the genuine issues facing Black men in America—economic empowerment, criminal justice reform, access to healthcare, and equitable education. We are not just talking about generic policy points; we are pushing for real solutions that will uplift our families, strengthen our communities, and build a future where Black men thrive.

Our agenda isn’t about promises without follow-through. It is about accountability. We are demanding that candidates who seek our vote commit to policies that address the systemic issues we face.

But the work doesn’t stop with the agenda or the candidates. It starts with us—Black men. This election is a defining moment, and our participation will decide its outcome. It’s time for us to show up, not only for ourselves but for our families, our children, and the future of this country. We’ve heard the rhetoric that our votes don’t matter. That ends now.

As we mobilize across the country, let this Weekend of Engagement and Day of Action serve as a powerful reminder: Black men are not just spectators in democracy; we are the key to shaping the nation’s future. We have the numbers, the influence, and the power. And come November, our voices will be heard.

Let’s stand together, rise together, and win together.

Together, we are the difference.
